The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

Dr. Rogers told the story of a pastor who left the pastorate after twenty years, and decided to become a funeral director.  Somebody asked him, “Why did you do that?”

He said, “Well, I spent about twelve years trying to straighten out John.  He never did get straightened out.  I spent fourteen months trying to straighten out the marriage of the Smiths, and it never did get straightened out.  I spent three years trying to straighten out Susan, and she never did get straightened out.”

“But, now that I’m a funeral director…when I straighten them out, they stay straight.”

pablo (18)

Well, contrary to what we may sometimes believe…it is not the job of the preacher to straighten anybody out.  The honest truth is that I cannot straighten out anyone.

That is the role of the Holy Spirit.

I can preach the truth and get it into your head, and perhaps even be very persuasive…but only the Holy Spirit can impart the truth and get it into your heart where it matters the most.

John 16:7–11 (NKJV) — 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

On my own, I cannot even convince you of the truth of what you just read.  That isn’t really my job.  In my own power I cannot convince someone to believe in a spiritual truth.

A preacher once said, “The truth of the matter is, anything that I could talk you into, eventually somebody else can come along and talk you out of.”

A natural man cannot receive spiritual truth without supernatural help.

If you share your faith with others, (and I hope you do—every Christian should!) you need to understand that it is not your job to get people to accept the gospel, nor even to fully understand the gospel.

It is your job to get people to hear the gospel and leave the rest to the Holy Spirit.

Whenever Charles Haddon Spurgeon would approach his pulpit to preach the gospel, he would be muttering under his breath: “I believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit.”

Spurgeon understood a concept that we all need to apply to our lives: Everything we do for the Lord Jesus Christ is totally dependent upon the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

As the old song goes: “All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One come down.”

Francis Chan authored a book titled, “Forgotten God.”  He deals with the role and ministry of the Holy Spirit…and how many times believers live as if He doesn’t exist and they have completely forgotten about Him.  That is the perfect title for a book on that subject because many believers have simply “forgotten” about the Holy Spirit.

For the next few weeks we will be looking at the role of the Holy Spirit in the conversion process of a new believer… and how these steps can only be accomplished by the Holy Spirit.

Full Combat Load

When I was in the Marines we had an expression: “full combat load.”  This term could be used to refer to the individual Marine or equipment.  For the Marine it meant that you would be carrying on your body every item needed to wage war in the field against the enemy…all of the ammunition, weapons, grenades, food, gear, medical equipment, communications gear etc.

pablo (11)

If you went into combat without your combat load you could quickly find yourself at a disadvantage.  Not only that, but you would also be risking your life and the life of your brothers who went into combat with you.

In previous posts we talked about the fact that we are at war.  This war is a very real spiritual war that is going on all around us…unfortunately, too many of us have failed to show up for the battle.  We talked about how important it is to know who our REAL enemy is: the devil.  His plans for you are different than God’s plans.

Paul says in v.11:

Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV) — 11 Put on the whole armor of God…

Literally what the verse says is this: “Put on the whole armor of God and keep it on.”  That is your “full combat load.”

There are no furloughs; there are no truces; there are no leaves of absence; there are no cease fires in this spiritual war.  You’ve got to keep your armor on and you’ve got to keep your guard up.

You don’t get weekends off…you can never let your guard down because just as surely as you do, Satan will hit you.  He will hit you at your weakest moment when you least expect it.

There is no point in denying it: Satan is dangerous.  He is deadly.  He is deceptive.

But listen to me carefully.  He is not invincible.

I will never forget how frightened people were of Saddam Hussein at the start of the first Gulf War, and people thought his armies would be incredibly strong (I believe he had the fourth largest army in the world at the time) and that he would be a dangerous enemy.

But after the war was over, in just a matter of hours, General Norman Schwarzkopf stood before a press conference and gave this assessment of the same.

He said, “Saddam is neither a strategist, nor is he schooled in the operational art, nor is he a tactician, nor is he a general, nor is he a soldier; other than that he is a great military man.”

  • Satan is not omnipotent.
  • Satan is not omnipresent.
  • Satan is not omniscient.

God is all three.

But other than those qualifications he is a powerful foe.

“But greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”  You see, we have an advantage over Satan.  It is the armor of God.

Hold your hands 24 inches apart, that is how thick some of the walls are on older battleships.  In fact, the armor-plating on an American battleship is so thick that a Russian Styx missile would bounce off an armor-plated bulkhead on the direct hit.

Armor on a ship is placed in areas where the ship is the most vulnerable to enemy attack.

Normally, an armor belt is placed around the sides of the ship from about ten feet below the water line to just above the water line.  Theoretically, a torpedo hitting the armor belt would not penetrate into the hull and cause flooding.

Likewise, armor-plating would be placed along the upper surface of the ship to repel bombs dropped from airplanes.

God has given us armor guaranteed to repulse the most powerful missiles, the strongest bombs, and the mightiest torpedoes that Satan can fire at us.

No wonder James said in:

James 4:7 (NKJV) — 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Did you know there is not a single verse in the Bible that tells us that we are to run from the devil?

The Bible says we are to flee temptation.

The Bible says we are to flee sin.

But the Bible never says we are to flee from the devil.

The Bible says we are to resist the devil and he will flee from us.

Jeffery C. Ward in his book, The Civil War, tells a story about a scene that took place on a battlefield during the battle of Gettysburg.  He said:

“Right in the middle of the Battle of the Wilderness, all the staff men who had been fighting in the east all this time—Grant had just come from the West—kept talking “Robert E. Lee, Robert E. Lee.  He’ll do this, he’ll do that, he’ll do the other.”

Ulysses S. Grant heard all he wanted to hear and finally said to them, “I am tired of hearing about Robert E. Lee.  You would think he was going to do a double somersault and land in our rear.  I want you to quit thinking about what he is going to do to you, and I want you to start thinking about what you’re going to do to him.”

We’re in a war.

We need to stop thinking and worrying about what the devil can do to us and start thinking about what we can do to him.

How will we win?

Our victory is assured because of the Lord Jesus Christ and His death on the cross, because of the awesome power of the Holy Spirit, and because of the armor of God.

It’s time for all of us to carry a “full combat load.”

Know Who Your Real Enemy Is

General MacArthur, a great military leader of his time once wrote an article that dealt with what was necessary for military success.  He gave four principles that he thought were the most important: Morale, strength, adequate supply source, and most importantly, a knowledge of the enemy.

pablo (10)

The Bible tells us exactly who our real enemy is:

Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV) — 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

When thinking about the devil we need to be careful and avoid two extremes in attitude that you may have towards Satan.

One extreme, many people ignore the devil; some even make fun of him.  They think of the devil as some kind of a mythical figure like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.

I’m not ashamed to tell you, I believe in a personal devil just as much as I believe in a personal God.

When I hear people say “there is no such thing as a personal devil” I’m reminded of the prize fighter whose opponent was beating him about half to death.  Every time he would come back to sit on the stool between rounds, his manager would say, “Go get him tiger, he hasn’t laid a hand on you!”

Well, for seven rounds this guy was getting beat from pillar to post and every time his manager would say the same thing.

Finally, with both eyes closed shut, bleeding from the nose and his lips cut wide open, when that manager said, “Go get him tiger, he hasn’t laid a hand on you!”  the fighter looked at the manager and said, “Then I want you to keep your eye on that referee because somebody is beating the daylights out of me!”

But we also need to avoid the other extreme of being obsessed with the devil.  I’m always concerned about Christians who see a demon in everything.

A preacher told this story:

I heard about a woman that went to a church picnic and the ladies were having a covered dish luncheon.  When she walked in one of these super spiritual ladies walked up to her and said, “What did you bring to eat?”

She said, “Deviled eggs.”

Well, immediately this woman flung her hands up high and said, “I bind everyone of them in the name of Jesus!”

That of course is a silly example…but, we must be careful with extremes.

I encourage you to give the devil his due, but don’t give the devil the farm. But we need to know who he is.

We’re told in v.12 that our battle is against:

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 … against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

That tells me that Satan is a spiritual being and that ought to tell you that not everything spiritual is necessarily good.

But it shouldn’t surprise you that our fight is spiritual because our foe is spiritual.

You’re not going to win your war against Satan by sheer will power… this is a spiritual battle.

“He quakes at the sight of the breastplate of righteousness.

He quivers before the shield of faith.

He quails before the sword of the spirit.”

Those are the only weapons that the devil is afraid of…and they are also the only weapons that will work.

Don’t take him lightly:

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 …principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age…

Don’t ever think you can handle him on your own because you can’t.  On your own he will overpower you every time.

Here is the key:

Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV) — 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Now the word “wiles” is a very interesting Greek word.  It gives us the English word “method.”  It literally means deceit or trickery.

It basically says, “Look out for the tricks of the devil.” Satan is the master of deception.

The devil has even deceived us in the way we think about him.

We conjure up the picture in our mind of a little man wearing long red underwear, with horns on his head, a forked tail and a pitchfork in his hand, walking around looking for somebody bending over.

A lot of people think of that kind of devil and think to themselves, “I can’t believe in that kind of devil.”

Well, I’ve got news for you.  I don’t believe in that kind of devil either.

The Bible says:

2 Corinthians 11:14 (NKJV) — 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.

I think if we saw the devil today that it would shock us how attractive he would look.  It would even shock you how nice and generous he could seem to be.  You would never know that he is the most wicked, treacherous force in the universe.

I want you to understand this devil is interested in darkness and wickedness.

We hear people say all of the time: “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.”  Well, I think we ought to add to that this reminder: “Satan hates you and has a terrible plan for your life.”

You mark this down.  The devil is doing everything he can right now to either take you to hell or, if you’re going to heaven, to make that trip as miserable as possible.

“God wants you to be happy and holy.

Satan wants you to be depressed and dirty.”

If you’re not saved, he’ll do everything he can to make sure that you never get saved; and if you are saved he’ll do everything he can to make you sin and cause you to lose the joy of your salvation.

As I talk about the devil, I realize that many of us could be intimidated because he is powerful.  But he isn’t “all-powerful” and it’s important to know who your real enemy is.

In the next blog post we will talk more about how to defeat him.

Get Ready to Attack!

The war that Christians find themselves in is not like any other war that you can read about in history books.  It isn’t like anything that is studied at West Point or taught in the military…because it is a spiritual war.

pablo (9)

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The war that I am talking about you are engaged it at this very moment.  Sure, you cannot see the bullets or hear the bombs necessarily…but, that doesn’t make this war any less real.

It’s being fought in your home.  That’s why Christian marriages are falling apart at a record rate, and why Christian children are rebelling against the authority of their parents.

It’s going on in your mind.  That’s why even ministers and leaders are falling prey to the trap of pornography and adultery.

It’s being fought in your heart.  That is why all of us have to wade into combat each day to do the right thing rather than the wrong thing.

If you don’t believe there’s a war going on, just check your news feed on social media and you’ll see the results of this war in things such as murder, rape, prostitution, abortion, terrorism, drug addiction, and child molestation.

These are the rotten eggs that are hatched by this terrible war.

Notice that Paul says in v.12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood…”

Every Christian has been drafted.  Every Christian has to fight.  There are no deferments, no exemptions, and no conscientious objectors in Christ’s army.

If you are a Christian you better get ready to rumble; you’re in the army now.

Let me tell you something.  When you give your heart to Jesus you don’t necessarily get into a life of fun–you get into a fight.  God not only puts salvation in your heart, He puts a sword in your hand.

When Paul came to the end of his life he said in:

2 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV) — 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

He exhorted Timothy, who he was discipling:

1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 Fight the good fight of faith…

I say again, the problem is we’ve got too many soldiers that have gone AWOL and too many Christians have waved the white flag of surrender without firing a shot.

And honestly, some of you reading this perhaps have no idea what I am talking about because you have never become engaged in this spiritual war.

Could it be that you have gone the way of the world?

The devil isn’t going to cause any problems with you…The reason why you haven’t run into the devil is you’re both traveling in the same direction.  The moment you turn around and go the direction God has called you to, I promise…you will run into him.

You cannot straddle the fence in this war. You cannot be like Switzerland; you cannot be neutral.  You’re either on one side or the other.

C.S. Lewis once said, “There is no neutral ground in the universe: every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.”

So at every waking moment you had better be on your guard, because there is a war that’s going on and the stakes are high!

In the next blog post we will talk about how to identify your enemy!

We are at War!

James Merritt once told that during one of the darkest periods of World War II, after the collapse of France and before America got involved, Winston Churchill wrote that the question in the minds of both friends and foes and it was this:  “Will Britain surrender too?”

At the time he made a speech that contained this sentence: “What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over.  I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin.  Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization.”

pablo (8)

If you are reading this and you are a Christian…you are at war, too.  You are in a battle.

In this battle the peace in your heart, the joy in your marriage, the wellbeing of your children, the influence you have in your community are all at stake.

You are involved in spiritual warfare.

Don’t yawn.  Don’t brush this off.  Don’t act like this isn’t some big deal.  It is.

One of the biggest problems is that many Christians, perhaps most, do not even realize it.  They have gone AWOL from the front lines and are asleep in the barracks.

The reason why many Christians are losing their battle with the devil, day-by-day, is because they’re not even showing up for the war.  In fact, I believe that most Christians try to fool themselves into believing that a war isn’t being fought.

And far too often Christians are going to war against each other and not the real enemy!

Someone has said, “Much of the church’s warfare today is fought by blindfolded soldiers who cannot see the forces ranged against them; who are buffeted by invisible opponents and respond by striking one another.”

Douglas MacArthur, one of our greatest generals, once said, “In war there is no substitute for victory.”

That statement is true in physical war, but doubly true for spiritual warfare.

Make no mistake about this: If you are a Christian: In your war, God wants you to be victorious.

The people of God need to stop retreating and begin attacking.

To illustrate this, let me share a story that has been used in many sermons as an illustration, but is valuable for our discussion:

The story of a football player who graduated from college, and the coach asked him if he would like to come on staff and be a scout and try to find other good football players.

He said, “Sure coach, what kind of a player are you looking for?”

He said, “Well, there’s a kind of guy that when you knock him down he just stays down.”

He said, “We don’t want him do we, coach?”

The coach said, “No, we don’t want him.  But then there’s the kind of guy that when you knock him down, he gets up.  But if you knock him down the second time he just stays down.”

The man said, “We don’t want him either do we coach?”

The coach said, “No, we don’t want him either.”

He said, “But there’s the kind of guy that when you knock him down he gets up; you knock him down and he gets up; you knock him down again and he just keeps getting up.”

The man said, “Now that’s the guy we want, right coach?”

The coach said, “No, we don’t want him either.  What I want you to do is find the guy who’s knocking all these other guys down, that’s the guy I want.”

Well, I believe it’s high time that many Christians begin to knock down some of these strongholds that they have allowed Satan to place in their lives.

“Too many Christians are limping into heaven as defeated saints, when they need to be leaping into heaven as victorious soldiers.”

The next few blog posts I will be sharing with you how you can have victory for yourself daily in your spiritual war.

Charge!

Be Faithful to the One True God

As we continue to look at Elijah taking a stand against his culture in his day, (which is very much like ours in America today) I want to remind us of what has happened so far:

pablo (7)

Israel at this point was drowning in sin, the leaders were self-serving and wicked and integrity was nowhere to be found.  Sound familiar?

And in that time when right was wrong and wrong was right, Elijah, a man who stood for righteousness and the one true God was considered not only politically incorrect but also an enemy of the state!

Elijah has confronted the false prophets and the people in their worship of a pagan god.  He challenged them to a duel–they set up an altar with a sacrifice and they would see who the true god was by who answered by fire.

The false prophets and worshipers of Baal could not get a response from their god no matter how hard they tried.

Elijah then had the sacrifice and altar absolutely soaked in water.

Remember: These false prophets had worked all day for hours and hours trying to get their god to answer and they were absolutely exhausted.

The prayer that Elijah prayed took, giver or take, less than 15 seconds.  Here is what he said:

1 Kings 18:36–37 (NKJV) — 36 And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”

All he was asking for was for God to be glorified and that is exactly what God did.

Here are the results:

1 Kings 18:38–40 (NKJV) — 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” 40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there.

Don’t miss what happened.  When the people saw the true God go into action they did what they should have done.  They fell at His feet and worshiped Him and surrendered their lives to Him!

Do you notice that the false prophets still did not?  They had so hardened their hearts to the true God that even with this “proof’ before them, they would not accept it.  They died in their stubborn rejection of the true God.

Here is what I want you to take away from this:

In this day and age that we are living in, God is still looking for His people to face the culture of our day with the truth about who He is.

There is nothing that will move an unsaved person who has no relationship to God into taking the steps he or she needs to take to have a right relationship with God…

Like seeing those of us who do have a relationship with God,

  • Showing it in the way we live
  • Showing it in the way we trust
  • Showing it in the way we obey God…

And that could be the biggest difference that we can make in the lives of lost people and in the culture today for our country.

May God’s people in this age, trust and obey God like never before.
